Adai Recipe - How to make Adai

Adai is one among the traditional recipe of south India.  In this post you going to learn the Adai recipe.

Ingredients for Adai Recipe

Idly rice – 2 cup
Toor dal - ½ cup
Chana dal - ½ cup
Red Chilly – 7 No.
Onion – 2No. Medium size
Coriander leaves – little
Methi leaves – little
Asafoetida Powder – 1 tspn
Salt to taste
Oil as required

Soak the rice and dal separately for 4 hours and after 4 hours grind the rice and dal separately in blender or wet grinder.  While grinding rice add red chilly and cumin seeds and grind as a coarse paste, then grind the toor dal and chana dal together.  After grinding mix both the batter and keep the adai dosa batter for 2 hours and if you want little more sour taste you can keep the adai dosa batter for 4 hours and prepare the Adai after 4 hours.

After 2 hours we have added salt asafoetida powder and till this what we have added is essential ingredients for Adai Recipe.  Now we going to add the optional ingredients.  Add the chopped onion to the Adai dosa batter followed by Methi leaves and Coriander leaves and mix it well.  You can add grated carrot, chopped cabbage, grated coconut, chopped curry leaves etc and all these are optional.  You can add required combination as per your taste.


Heat the tawa and pour the adai dosa batter in the tawa and spread the batter by using spatula circular motion and little oil on the sided of the adai wait for a minute and turn to the other side to cook and little oil on the sided again, then turn again to other side and cook.  The delicious Adai / Kara Adai is ready to serve.  No need of any side dish for this little jaggery piece will do.

Coconut Milk Rice
